FindLaw Sold to Internet Brands

FindLaw Sold to Internet Brands: What It Means for Your Law Firm

FindLaw, the legal directory that owns SuperLawyers, has recently been sold by Thomson Reuters (the owners of WestLaw and West Publishing) to Internet Brands. Internet Brands is no stranger to the legal marketing world—it also owns Martindale-Hubbell (lawyers.com), Avvo, and Nolo. While Avvo serves as a legal directory, Nolo operates as a legal matching service that, let’s face it, often funnels low-quality cases to lawyers who are desperate—or uninformed—enough to pay for them.

A Shift Away from Website Services

This acquisition signals a clear move by Internet Brands toward prioritizing directories over website services. If your firm’s website is still with FindLaw, you’re likely to see a decline in service quality as the focus shifts to their directory products. While some of these directory listings may offer value, it’s no secret that most firms are being overcharged for their websites—and many aren’t getting the results they deserve.

Why Make a Change?

If you’re frustrated with rising costs, declining service quality, or underperforming results, now is the perfect time to reevaluate your strategy. That’s where I can help.

Here’s What I Offer:

  1. Analyze Your Current Setup
I’ll review your FindLaw Insights Report to identify what’s working, what’s not, and where you’re being overcharged.

  2. Negotiate or Cancel Underperforming Services
We can renew or negotiate the terms of any valuable directory listings while canceling your website and any products that aren’t delivering ROI.

  3. Rebuild Your Website
I’ll create a custom-built website for a flat rate, complete with all your content and proper SEO coding to ensure it performs better than ever.

Does It Really Make a Difference?

Based on my experience—and industry trends—it absolutely does. Consider this: after posting a question on Reddit asking law firms whether switching from FindLaw made a difference, I received an eye-opening response from a FindLaw employee:

This insider’s response, coupled with the trend away from website services and the increasing costs, is a flashing red light. If you’ve been on the fence about switching, now’s the time to act.
